Learning about life from the Kuroshio Current
Iburi, Tosashimizu City, Kochi Prefecture, is the home of many of the creatures on display at the Kaiyukan. In the Pacific Ocean that spreads out before you, many creatures come with the Kuroshio Current, including large migratory fish such as Whale shark.
On September 24, 1997, the Osaka Aquarium Biological Research Institute of Iburi Center, an annex of the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, was opened in the port facing this rich sea. Here, the creatures exhibited at the Kaiyukan are collected and raised, and research is conducted on the surrounding sea area.
The Iburi Center's No. 2 tank is a large tank with a testing pool and a water volume of 3,300 tons. It was opened in December 2009 as a facility for the research and study of large fish such as Whale shark. It is not usually open to the public, but in order to cooperate with regional development, it is open to the public to the extent that it does not interfere with research and studies.
The aquarium keeper dedicated to the Iburi Center conduct research activities that are unique to the Iburi Center, which do not have the facilities or environment that the Kaiyukan can offer.
We have a proven track record in research into the ecology of large fish such as Whale shark and Spinetail devilray, as well as in the development of husbandry training.
"Fishes of the Kuroshio Current, Japan" was published as part of the 10th anniversary of the opening of Kaiyukan, and is the culmination of research that Kaiyukan conducted at the Iburi Center in collaboration with Kyoto University and Kochi University from November 1997 to November 2000.
The book is a compilation of the fish fauna *1 of the sea area around the Iburi district of Kochi Prefecture, and includes beautiful underwater ecology photos taken by diving into the Kuroshio Current and colorful specimen photos. It introduces 567 species of fish from 136 families in both Japanese and English, including two species *2 of the barracuda family, the "Iburi barracuda" and the "Sea lionfish" of the pufferfish family, which are being recorded for the first time in Japan. Until now, there have been few illustrated guides in Japan that include both ecology and specimen photos and provide detailed explanations. It also uses photos and sketches to provide a detailed introduction to the morphology and captive ecology of Whale shark and ocean Ocean sunfish that were collected in the Iburi district and exhibited at the Kaiyukan .
This book can be used as a reference book for those studying ichthyology, and also as an introductory book for those who want to know more about fish.
*1 Fish fauna: Where and what kinds of fish live.
*2 First record in Japan: This species had been discovered overseas but was thought not to live in Japan. It was discovered for the first time in this research study and recorded for the first time with a Japanese name. (Note) This is not a new species.
