At Kaiyukan, we conduct a variety of research activities related to species preservation and environmental conservation so that we can pass on the ocean, where diverse life lives, and the Earth to future generations.
Here we introduce the research results and initiatives of Kaiyukan.
Whale shark migration route survey (biologging)
There are many mysteries surrounding the ecology of Whale shark. At Kaiyukan, when Whale shark are released into the sea, they are fitted with recording devices and their migration routes are investigated.
Artificial breeding of Southern rockhopper penguin
At Kaiyukan, we are working on artificial insemination of Southern rockhopper penguin. By establishing this technology, we hope to contribute to the preservation of the Southern rockhopper penguin, which is at risk of extinction in the wild.
Complete artificial rearing of Ringed seal
They attempted to raise a Ringed seal completely by hand, and through trial and error, they successfully raised it to the point where it could be exhibited. As a first attempt at this, they left a valuable record.
Survey of Finless Porpoises in Osaka Bay
Osaka Bay is home to small porpoises called finless porpoises. We believe that studying porpoises and raising awareness of them is one way to preserve the richness of our oceans for the future, and so we are working on studying porpoises.
Osaka Kaiyukan Marine Biological Research Institute Iburi Center
Tosashimizu City, Kochi Prefecture, is the home of many of the creatures at Whale shark, including the Kaiyukan. Here, the creatures on display are collected and raised, and research is conducted on the surrounding sea area.
"What we can do for the future environment"
We have set up a mini corner
At Kaiyukan, we will continue to make further contributions to raising awareness of environmental issues that are spreading on a global scale.
The magazine "Kaiyuu"
We are releasing PDFs of publications related to Kaiyukan's breeding and research, etc., with the aim of making them useful at zoos and aquariums.
