We measured the total length of a Whale shark!
In commemoration of "Weight Anniversary" on November 1, we measured the total length of the Whale shark currently on display in the "Pacific Ocean" tank in the Aquarium today, November 3 (Wednesday, holiday). The results are as follows. Total length Estimated weight Estimated age Yu: 5m 85cm Last year (5m 70cm) 1,500kg (1,400kg) 14-15 years old Umi: 4m 80cm Last year (4m 50cm) 800kg (750kg) 6-7 Kaiyukan , we measure the total length of Whale shark as part of our ecological research and health management of Whale shark , whose ecology is still unknown. The total length is measured using a tape measure, and this method was achieved by training by touching the Whale shark's body while it was being fed. Through the Weighing Anniversary, we hope to introduce the healthy growth of living creatures and to encourage interest in the natural environment. [Comment from the person in charge] Both Yu and Umi have grown well this year. The reason we were able to measure the Whale shark without any hesitation is thanks to the daily training it undergoes. We will continue to measure it regularly and make efforts to manage its health.

The nickname of the baby bird has also been decided as "Chirippu". The nickname of the Tufted puffin at Kaiyukan comes from the place name of Hokkaido, Hokkaido, where the Tufted puffin lives in Japan. Comments from the aquarium keeper in charge of the birth of this Tufted puffin I was relieved that it had safely left the nest. I was surprised to see it swimming the next morning when I predicted that it would soon leave the nest. Unlike the adult birds, the young ones have thin beaks and dull yellow legs. They are characterized by being very busy scratching the water when they are on the surface of the water. Recently, they have started to come ashore and eat food from the hands of the staff.
