World's first confirmed pregnancy in a Spinetail devilray
We have confirmed that a Spinetail devilray exhibited in the "Pacific Ocean" tank in the Aquarium is pregnant. This is the first time in the world that a Spinetail devilray has been pregnant in captivity. In addition, in order to provide a more optimal birthing environment, a partition net will be installed in the "Pacific Ocean" tank from Thursday, December 15th for the time being. The Spinetail devilray is a species that was successfully exhibited for the first time in the world by Kaiyukan in 2008, and currently two of them, one male and one female, are exhibited in the "Pacific Ocean" tank. Mating behavior has been confirmed since around February 2022, and an ultrasound examination confirmed the pregnancy of one fetus on August 17th. The Spinetail devilray is a "viviparous" species, which means that the baby is born after it has grown to a certain extent in the womb, and the fetus is currently about 50 cm in width (the size between the two pectoral fins). It is expected that the baby will grow to about 70 to 90 cm and be born around February 2023. About the Spinetail devilray English name: Spinetail devilray Scientific name: Mobula mobula A large ray with a body width of about 3m that is distributed from the coasts to the open ocean in tropical and subtropical waters around the world, characterized by a pair of head fins. Its population is said to be decreasing, and it is designated as "Endangered (EN)" on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List. Research has not progressed due to its habitat and the small number of cases of captivity, and there are many mysteries about its ecology. Panel exhibition "Challenge to breed the Spinetail devilray! ~ What is the mysterious ecology of the Spinetail devilray? " A panel exhibition will be held to introduce the ecology of the Spinetail devilray and the efforts of the aquarium keeper to breed it. Period: December 23, 2022 ~ Venue: "Pacific Ocean" tank, 5th floor viewing corridor *The content may be changed or canceled without notice depending on the condition of the creature.
