[4/11-5/31] Whale shark will fly in the sky again this year! We will be hoisting "Whale Shark Streamers". This year, "Coral Streamers" will be making their first appearance.
4/11-5/31 Whale shark fly in the sky! ? We will raise the "Whale Shark Streamer" This year, the "Coral Streamer" will make its first appearance! *Due to the approach of a typhoon, the staging will be canceled from May 28th and will end. In honor of Children's Day, the "Whale Shark Streamer" with 25 species and 30 creatures as its Whale shark, including the whale shark, will be raised in the event plaza in front of Kaiyukan. This year, the 16th time the event is held, the "Coral Streamer" will make its first appearance. In addition, to coincide with the raising of the Whale Shark Streamer, a workshop will be held in the Aquarium to make the "Whale Shark Streamer" with origami. "Whale Shark Streamer" (Past Events) The "Whale Shark Streamer" was originally a fishing tool for bonito fishing that took advantage of the nature of small fish following large fish. In addition to the Kaiyukan Whale shark, Kaiyukan has raised a wide variety of sea creature streamers. This year, in preparation for the reopening (scheduled for September) of the "Great Barrier Reef" tank, which recreates one of the world's largest coral reefs, various coral-related exhibits are being held on the fourth floor of the Aquarium's entrance building, including the special exhibition "Coral Circling Life" and the planned exhibition "MAKING OF GBR." Announcement of ArCSⅡ Coastal Environmental Issues Joint Lecture "Understanding the Present of the Arctic Region and Linking it to the Future - What We Can Learn from Seals"
Kaiyukan x ArCSⅡ joint event "Knowing the Arctic Region today and connecting it to the future - What we can learn from seals" "ArCSⅡ (Arctic Research Acceleration Project)" is a project launched by three organizations, the National Institute of Polar Research, the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), and Hokkaido University, with the aim of studying the Arctic region, where the effects of global warming are most evident, and covers a wide range of research fields, including marine issues and coastal environmental issues. In 2018, Kaiyukan accompanied the first Arctic voyage survey on Hokkaido University's training ship "Oshoromaru," which was carried out as a project of "ArCS (Arctic Research Promotion Project)," the predecessor of ArCSⅡ, and conducted a collection survey, and also accompanied the "Oshoromaru" Arctic voyage survey, which was carried out again as an ArCSⅡ project in 2023. In the run up to the autumn 2024 reopening of the "Great Barrier Reef" tank, which recreates the ocean of one of the world's largest coral reefs, two exhibitions featuring coral will be held from Tuesday, March 5, 2024. (Screening time: about 4 minutes Screening frequency: about 12 times per hour) Diverse coral About 60 corals of about 20 species are exhibited in a 4-meter-wide aquarium tank made up of four connected tank . Various explanations are given in a poetic style to make them easy to understand, and tank equipment for raising delicate corals is also on display. [Ended] Support for victims and areas affected by the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake
We would like to express our condolences to those who lost their lives in the recent 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, and our heartfelt sympathies to those affected. *Exhibition has ended. Both the Baren jellyfish and the Youraku jellyfish are colonial jellyfish, consisting of a group of individuals called "zooids," each of which has its own role in each part of its body. They usually live in the open ocean, and this is the first time that both species have been exhibited at Kaiyukan . ▲Baren jellyfish▲Yoraku jellyfish Location: "Jellyfish" Aquarium the aquarium Species: Baren jellyfish, Youraku jellyfish *Exhibition may end without notice. A Setsubun unique to Kaiyukan! Oni-san Divers will appear in the "Pacific Ocean" tank ! Ended From Monday, January 29, 2024 to Sunday, February 4, 2024, divers dressed as "oni" (demons), who appear in the bean-throwing ceremony to celebrate "Setsubun," will appear in the "Pacific Ocean" tank , where Whale shark sharks swim. During the event, they will clean the acrylic panels and bottom sand of the "Pacific Ocean" tank three times a day, and will wave to visitors and take commemorative photos in between work, creating a Setsubun unique to Kaiyukan.
