The first "root-stoma jellyfish" to be exhibited in Japan
From Thursday, July 29, 2021, a type of root-stem jellyfish bred at Kaiyukan will be exhibited for the first time in Japan in the Kaiyukan exhibition area "Jellyfish" . Kaiyukan will continue to breed and exhibit this species, working to understand its biology and also considering proposing a Japanese name. A type of root-stem jellyfish to be exhibited This species was acquired from the Berlin Aquarium in 2008 in the form of a "polyp" (a form of jellyfish growth stage), and although "ephyra", which are jellyfish larvae, occasionally occurred, they had not been grown to a size suitable for exhibition. In April 2021, the breeding environment for the ephyra was reviewed and an tank suitable for the size was hand-made. After trial and error in maintaining the water quality, the strength of the water flow, and the frequency of feeding, the umbrella diameter has grown to 5 cm, which is suitable for exhibition. We will continue to conduct various research activities related to species preservation and environmental conservation so that we can deliver the sea and earth, where diverse organisms live, to the future. *Exhibition may end without notice depending on the condition of the organisms. [About the "root mouth jellyfish"] Scientific name: Rhizostoma octopus. It lives in the coastal waters of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and is known to grow to about 90 cm. "Root mouth jellyfish" is one of the names for a group of jellyfish, including the "Bizen jellyfish" and "Octopus jellyfish," which have also been exhibited at Kaiyukan . Kaiyukan will continue to breed and exhibit this species and strive to elucidate its biology, and is also considering proposing a Japanese name. A type of root mouth jellyfish to be exhibited this time In 2008, this species was transferred from the Berlin Aquarium in the state of "polyp" (a form of jellyfish growth stage), and although "ephyra," which is a jellyfish juvenile, was occasionally generated, it was not able to grow to a size that can be exhibited. From April 2021, the breeding environment of the ephyra was reviewed and an tank suitable for the size was handmade. After much trial and error in maintaining water quality, water current strength, and feeding frequency, the diameter of the umbrella has grown to 5cm, making it suitable for display. We will continue to conduct various research activities related to species preservation and environmental conservation so that we can pass on the ocean and earth, where diverse organisms live, to future generations. *Exhibition may end without notice depending on the condition of the organism. *Voting for a nickname for the Ringed seal born on April 1st is now closed!
*The deadline has passed. Thank you for all your votes. The Ringed seal born on April 1st is growing up healthy and strong! At Kaiyukan, we will vote for a nickname for the Ringed seal(nicknamed Arale), born on Thursday, April 1, 2021. The voting period is from Monday, July 12, 2021 to Monday, July 26, 2021, and you can vote using the dedicated form! The nickname will be announced on Sunday, August 1, 2021. The nickname will be decided by voting from five carefully selected ideas by the aquarium keeper in charge, with various thoughts about the baby Arale. The Ringed seal voting for the nickname (photographed on June 21, 2021) The baby Arale weighed 2.44 kg immediately after birth, but has continued to grow steadily through artificial nursing, and is now over 14 kg and is growing well. Recently, we have been focusing on enrichment efforts to stimulate his life and bring out his behavioral repertoire, and he has shown interest in various things such as balls, and has been observed to exhibit a variety of behaviors. In the future, we plan to consider the growth and development of this individual and conduct training to acclimate him to the "Arctic Region" tank where other Ringed seal live as a new stimulus. "Nickname candidates" Mizore: His face at birth resembled that of his mother Arale, and Mizore, who also has weather similar to Arale, was named after him. Kiri: His face resembled that of his father Moya, and he lost his white fur, so Kiri, who also has weather similar to Moya, was named after him. Hare: With the hope that he will continue to grow up to be a presence that brings a bright future to the Ringed seal at Kaiyukan . Harusame: A combination of weather and the season of birth, in honor of the baby Arale and Moya. Leopard: A leopard that is bigger than Arale. With the hope that he will grow up to be bigger than his mother [Comment from the aquarium keeper] Immediately after birth, he showed symptoms such as hypothermia and required care, but thanks to the care, he has now finished molting (when his white fur is replaced with the same fur as an adult) and weaning (when his food is switched from milk to fish) and is growing well. When deciding on a nickname this time, the aquarium keeper came up with a plan with great care. We will exhibit a baby "Porcupinefish"
We are exhibiting the first baby " Porcupinefish, " a member of the Long-spine porcupine fish family, at Kaiyukan . Five " Porcupinefish " fry will be on display at the "Special Exhibition "Gyugyu-tto Cute" special exhibition on the 5th floor of the Aquarium , which began on Thursday, April 29, 2021 (national holiday). This marks only the second successful breeding of this species in the world (according to Kaiyukan research) and the first at Kaiyukan . As a result, breeding techniques for captive breeding have not yet been established, and the detailed developmental process is unknown. The fry on display were discovered among the eggs of this species hidden in the sand by a aquarium keeper tank and cleaning the " Cook Strait" tank. To prevent predation by other species housed in the tank, they were retrieved. After trial and error, including temperature control and seawater concentration adjustment based on examples of breeding with other species, the eggs hatched on January 15, 2021. The hatched fry, which were approximately 3mm long immediately after hatching, have now grown to approximately 20mm, and their characteristic spines are now visible. Kaiyukan will continue to elucidate the ecology and appeal of this species through its exhibits and breeding, while also contributing to various research activities related to species preservation and environmental conservation. Exhibition Overview: Location: Kaiyukan 5th Floor Special Exhibition "Special Exhibition "Gyugyu-tto Cute" Period: Thursday, April 29, 2021 (National Holiday) - July 2021 (Scheduled) *Subject to change or cancellation without notice depending on the condition of the animals. After that, spines gradually appeared. Now, about three months after hatching, the young have many spines like adult fish, but their body color is generally black. We will continue to conduct research on this species, aiming to clarify its developmental process and establish breeding techniques in captivity. About the Porcupinefish: English name: Porcupine fish, Scientific name: Allomycterus pilatus. This species is a member of the Long-spine porcupine fish family that inhabits the waters around New Zealand. The "porcupine" part of its English name means porcupine, and as its name suggests, it has many spines on its body surface that are formed by deformed scales. At Kaiyukan, adult Porcupinefish are displayed in the "Cook Strait" tank, which recreates the waters of New Zealand. Growth Process of Juveniles: At hatching (1/15): Approximately 3mm. Characteristic translucent body. No distinguishing features are yet apparent. 16th day (1/31): Approximately 5mm. Greenish, rounded, translucent body. The characteristic spines of this species are absent. Day 26 (February 10th) Approximately 7mm The body surface turns black and the areas where the spines will grow appear to have a spotted pattern. aquarium keeper are raising the baby Ringed seal seal as parents.
The aquarium keeper are raising the "baby Ringed seal " as a parent. In consideration of the ecology and personality of pregnant Ringed seal , the Kaiyukan has taken every possible measure to ensure the birth, such as changing the mother seal to an individual breeding and gradually closing the viewing area of the main tank. As a result, signs of birth were seen on March 31st, and observation was continued around the clock, with birth confirmed the next day on April 1st. After the birth, the baby was examined in the back yard and symptoms such as hypothermia and hypoglycemia were found, so the veterinarians and the aquarium keeper worked together to care for it. The care was successful, and the symptoms seen after birth improved, but because it took time to care for it, we gave up raising the baby in the exhibition tank and the aquarium keeper are raising it as a parent around the clock. The baby still needs careful attention. We will continue to do our best to help the baby grow. Although the date for displaying the baby has not yet been decided, the land viewing area of the "Arctic Region" tank will be gradually opened from April 15th, where visitors will be able to see the Ringed seal(nicknamed Arale). About the Ringed seal baby Ringed seal baby (photographed on April 5th) Date of birth: 2:58 a.m., Thursday, April 1st, 2021 Birthplace: "Arctic Region" tank Sex: Male Body length: Approximately 55 cm (at birth), approximately 55 cm (as of April 8th) Weight: 2.44 kg (at birth), 3.29 kg (as of April 13th) Parents: Mother: Nicknamed "Arale" (estimated age 16), Father: Nicknamed "Moya" (estimated age 13-14 years old) Comment from the Ringed seal aquarium keeper: "I wanted Arale to give birth in peace," so I made all the preparations I could think of before the birth. We were very encouraged by the support we received from everyone. Thank you very much. After the birth, we saw that the baby was not feeling well, so we worked as a team to provide 24-hour care, determined to make sure he recovered. When his condition improved, we were so happy that we cried. We still need to be very careful, so we will continue to do our best to provide artificial feeding and strive to ensure the baby's growth. We hope you will continue to watch over him.
