August 3, 2026

These sea angels were collected by Kaiyukan aquarium keeper at the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan while accompanying the Hokkaido University training vessel "Oshoro Maru" on its Arctic expedition from June 19 to July 31, 2026.

Clione are shell-less mollusks that inhabit the Arctic Region and surrounding waters. They live by flapping their wing-like "pteropods" and drifting through the ocean.

In addition to the sea angel (Clione), this survey also collected other rare fish and invertebrates that inhabit the Arctic Region. We will inform you again once the exhibition is decided.
Details of the voyage to the Arctic Region and the collection of marine life can be found on the blog "Behind the Scenes at Kaiyukan" .

[About Clione]

2608_clione_02.jpg

It is a type of mollusk that does not have a shell, and its Japanese name is "Clione" (naked scallop). In Japan, it is commonly called " Kurione ," derived from its genus name "Clione." It inhabits cold waters such as the Arctic Region and its surrounding areas, and lives by flapping its wing-like organs called "pteropods" and drifting through the sea. Its primary food source is the "Mijin-ukimaimai," another type of mollusk, which it catches by extending six tentacles (buccal cones) from the mouth on the top of its head.

*Please note that the exhibition period and the number of exhibits may be changed without notice depending on the condition of the animals.
